Mr. DAVIS of North Carolina

Mr. DAVIS of North Carolina. Mr. Speaker, we honor the transformative power of diplomacy. Four years ago, the Abraham Accords opened the door to a new era of peace, bringing together Israel, Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates, and later Morocco in an unprecedented step toward stability in the Middle East. The signing of the Abraham Accords, a historic moment, reminds us that even in the face of deep division, it is possible to find common ground. Israel, a beacon of democracy in a region too often defined by conflict, has long been a vital partner in our pursuit of shared security and prosperity. The Abraham Accords highlight not only Israel's crucial role in securing its own future, but its commitment to building enduring alliances that benefit the global community. Yet our work is far from over. We must remain unwavering in our commitment to support Israel and all partners who extend the hand of peace. Let us continue building a world where dignity, security, and freedom are the rights of all.

TROPICAL STORM DEBBY2024-09-12

Mr. DAVIS of North Carolina

Mr. DAVIS of North Carolina. Mr. Speaker, Tropical Storm Debby ripped through eastern North Carolina this past month. Less than 3 weeks before students were due to return from summer break, Springfield Middle School and Lucama, North Carolina, sustained severe damage to the sixth and seventh grade hallways resulting from a tornado causing administrators to scramble. We visited the school. Despite the fierce wind removing the roof and debris everywhere, American flags mounted in the classrooms continue to fly. Superintendent Dr. Lane Mills and the school board are to be commended for efforts to return students back to their school. We give a special shoutout to Principal Kelly Thomas, teachers, educational support professionals, and the community for so many generous contributions. What a great display of resilience, and I wish the Wildcats a great school year.

REMEMBERING CASSIE MAE SMITH2024-09-11

Mr. DAVIS of North Carolina

Mr. DAVIS of North Carolina. Mr. Speaker, I rise to commemorate a remarkable woman, Cassie Mae Smith, a Battleboro, North Carolina, resident, and my State of the Union guest this year whose beautiful life spanned 109 years. On August 10, she passed at her home, surrounded by family and friends. She was a beloved figure, affectionately called Ma Cassie by her neighbors and friends. She was born in 1914, before women had the right to vote. Once Ma Cassie was able to exercise her right to vote, she voted in every election she could and began advocating for others to do the same. In March, my office helped her achieve two items on her bucket list. She had never met a President or flown on an airplane. She flew to our Nation's Capital for the State of the Union. Afterward, she met President Joe Biden. While here, I am grateful for so many colleagues from across the country and from across the aisle for taking the time to speak with her. I am also grateful for President Biden spending time talking with her. If not the oldest, she had to be one of the oldest ever to attend the State of the Union Address. It meant a lot to her, and she was indeed grateful. She loved our country, the United States of America. Her story of resilience and grace has touched the lives of many, including my own. Her journey has inspired us all, from working on a farm in North Carolina to traveling for the first time at 109 on an airplane to our Nation's Capital. For those who knew her, Ms. Cassie Smith was also a woman of unwavering faith. She loved the Lord. She loved her church, Pittman Grove Baptist Church, and Pastor Thomas Ray Green and his wife, Sharon, who traveled with her for the State of the Union. In fact, after the State of the Union, she made clear to me, she said: ``I know my pastor prays for me.'' Frank Smith, her son, said his mother had a deep spiritual connection with God, always looking up when she prayed. He once asked: ``Momma, who are you talking to?'' She said: ``I am talking to the Lord.'' I also recognize Faye, Frank's wife and Ms. Cassie's caregiver, and all her caregivers. According to her son, the family had planned to celebrate Ma Cassie's 110th birthday this October with a trip to the mountains, the last item that she had on the bucket list. Well, she didn't make it to the mountains. However, Frank, her son, said it best: ``God has said, I am going to take her, perhaps, to the mountain top.'' We will forever hold her legacy in our hearts, and my deepest condolences go to her family and the Battleboro community.

OFFERING BEST WISHES TO DR. KARRIE DIXON IN NEW ROLE2024-07-10

Mr. DAVIS of North Carolina

Mr. DAVIS of North Carolina. Mr. Speaker, Elizabeth City State University, located in northeastern North Carolina, holds a significant place among historically Black colleges and universities. Despite its prestigious status, the institution faced grave concerns some years ago. Discussions arose within the North Carolina General Assembly regarding the potential closure of the university, which sparked a spirited response from dedicated alums and community leaders, who rallied to keep the institution open. Their unwavering support and dedication played a crucial role in the survival of the university. As a result of their impassioned support, State leaders ultimately committed to ensuring the university's continued existence. However, this commitment came with the expectation of formulating a comprehensive plan to invigorate and fortify the institution. It became evident that the university would need a committed and visionary education leader, a unifying figure, and a skilled team builder to orchestrate this revitalization. During this critical phase, Dr. Karrie Dixon emerged as that figure. Assuming the role of chancellor, Dr. Dixon charted a new course for the university. Her transformative initiatives played a significant role in the university's resurgence. Notably, her leadership saw the establishment of a leading aviation sciences program at ECSU, the State's sole program. Furthermore, Dr. Dixon's unwavering drive and commitment inspired students to enroll and remain at Elizabeth City State University, breathing new life into the institution. Her leadership saved the university and attracted a new generation of students, promising a brighter future in northeastern North Carolina. The impact of Chancellor Dixon's leadership became evident as, over 6 years, she laid the foundation for a promising future for this esteemed institution. Her astute leadership and unwavering dedication solidified her as the right leader for the university during a critical season of change and growth. As Chancellor Dixon has now assumed the reins at North Carolina Central University, bringing her closer to her family, she left a remarkable leadership and transformation legacy at Elizabeth City State University. Viking pride. Viking pride. Viking pride. Acknowledging her extraordinary contributions, I gladly join the community and offer my heartfelt best wishes to Dr. Dixon as she has transitioned from leading the Vikings into her new role at the helm of the Eagles. I have every confidence she will live up to the motto: Truth and Service. The drumline helped provide an incredible welcome. Eagle pride, amplified.

HONORING ROSANELL EATON2024-07-09

Mr. DAVIS of North Carolina

Mr. DAVIS of North Carolina. Madam Speaker, I rise to honor the remarkable life and enduring legacy of Rosanell Eaton. She achieved incredible feats, overcoming obstacles and championing voting rights. Mother Eaton was a trailblazing figure in Franklin County where she was the first African American to register and vote. She rode 8 miles to Louisburg at the age of 21 on a mule to pass a literacy test. Her work placed her on the State and national stage with her daughter, Armenta, by her side until her passing at 97 years old. She wore many hats and had an infectious smile and loved her church, her faith. Recently, Michael and Deborah Liter, church members, renovated the building that once served as the local board of elections office at 217 Court Street and named it in her honor. Mother Eaton's impact was felt far and wide, and she still inspires us. While at the building dedication, the sky became overcast, but the Sun reappeared, and our angel shone upon us.

NORTH CAROLINA DROUGHT2024-07-08

Mr. DAVIS of North Carolina

Mr. DAVIS of North Carolina. Mr. Speaker, the current drought situation has reached a critical point. It is hitting hard, and many farmers have told me they have never seen anything like this in a lifetime. According to the U.S. Drought Monitor, 16 counties in North Carolina's First Congressional District are currently at a D1 drought level, and three are at a D2. I have witnessed firsthand the devastating effects of this drought on crops such as withered cornfields and parched tobacco plants. Every State from Georgia to Maryland faces similar damaging drought levels. Our farmers have had enough to deal with, and a drought makes everything more challenging. It also affects local businesses that rely on the agriculture industry, creating a ripple effect across many rural communities. Today I sent a letter to Secretary Vilsack calling for an immediate disaster designation. I strongly urge the USDA to get Federal assistance out the door.

PRIORITIZING BORDER SECURITY2024-06-26

Mr. DAVIS of North Carolina

Mr. DAVIS of North Carolina. Mr. Speaker, we must prioritize border security. After visiting the border three times since taking office, it was indeed an eye-opening experience. Border Patrol agents face severe staff shortages, often working long hours, pulled from their families, and need better infrastructure. Border communities need more resources, and the increasing influx of fentanyl across the country poses a significant threat to public health. We must stop drug cartels. Our southern border is critical to our national security. I remain dedicated to taking a collaborative approach to address comprehensive immigration reform and securing the southern border. I am willing to work closely with my colleagues from both sides of the aisle to bring about positive change for the people of eastern North Carolina and the entire Nation.

Homeownership for communities across the east is the cornerstone of stability and prosperity. From putting down roots to building wealth, owning a home represents a significant milestone in the lives of Americans. Through homeownership, we build strong communities and provide stability for families, yet we know there are many challenges. Affordability remains a concern for many hardworking families. We had an extensive discussion regarding divestment, the new Air Task Force, and upgrading the combat range. It is crucial to recognize that Seymour Johnson plays a vital role in eastern North Carolina's economy, which is economically distressed. It is imperative that we prioritize our national security interests and protect this community. I support the National Defense Authorization Act, including a provision requiring the Air Force to contract with the Department of Defense to conduct an assessment and report back to Congress. The Air Force must prioritize transparency and accountability to the Wayne County residents.

CELEBRATING GREENE CENTRAL HIGH BASEBALL TEAM2024-06-03

Mr. DAVIS of North Carolina. Mr. Speaker, a crowd wearing GC- emblazoned blue T-shirts with ``We Over Me'' stamped on the back screamed loudly for joy, celebrating the moment as the Greene Central High School Ram baseball team rushed the field, accompanied by the stirring melody by Queen, ``We Are the Champions,'' yes, of the world. I congratulate the Greene Central Ram baseball team for securing the 2024 North Carolina High School Athletic Association's 2A championship title. It was a nearly flawless season, 29-1. Baseball is an integral part of our rich heritage in Greene County and my hometown of Snow Hill. No one has contributed more to putting us on the baseball map than the legendary North Carolina Hall of Famer, Coach James ``Rabbit'' Fulghum. Coach Fulghum, who is no longer actively coaching, always attends games. He was there in Burlington, North Carolina, passionately supporting this remarkable team. I am honored to recognize the team members: Noah Uzzell, Braden Burress, Austin Hardy, Cameron Taylor, Brady Anderson, Jordan Scott, Elijah Monroe, Mason Dillon, Riley Radford, Justin Mitchell, Noah Roberson, Easton Creech, Everett Kirkland, Dallas Lee, Peyton Wainright, Austin Brock, and Will Radford. Coaching this remarkable team were Head Coach Ben Brann, Russell Brann, Jayme Tilley, and David Bryant, also the athletic director. A special shout-out goes to tournament MVPs Will Radford and Braden Burress, who also tied a State record with 59 runs in a season. Mr. Speaker, after each player received their medal, the team was presented with the championship trophy and banner, and the team gathered on the mound for a group photo. The crowd erupted once again. Some were even moved to tears this time as Coach Fulghum, with the help of his family and a walker, made his way to join the team for a picture. Sports in rural communities unite the community, and this exceptional team accomplished exactly that. The team has grown up together and will now remain together, forever bonded with this achievement. Today, tomorrow, and forever, we are proudly standing with our Rams. Ram pride forever.
