HONORING THE LIFE AND LEGACY OF JOHN FEROLETO2025-05-15
Mr. KENNEDY of New York
Mr. KENNEDY of New York. Mr. Speaker, I rise today to honor the life and legacy of a truly remarkable Buffalonian, John Feroleto. John passed away unexpectedly on April 6 at the age of 71. John Feroleto was more than a distinguished trial lawyer, he was a devoted family man, a pillar of our community, and a shining example of the American Dream. Growing up on Buffalo's West Side as the son of a construction worker and a beautician, John became the first in his family to attend college, working his way through school by starting his own house painting business at just 16 years old. His determination led him to the University at Buffalo School of Law, where he met his wife of nearly 45 years, Paula, who is now a highly respected State Supreme Court judge. Together, they built not just a loving family but a legacy that has profoundly shaped all of western New York. For more than 35 years, John dedicated his career to fighting for his clients and standing up for those who couldn't stand up for themselves. He established Feroleto Law, which grew into a family enterprise with his children John, Joel, and Kate all following in his footsteps as attorneys. His son John was recently appointed to the Buffalo city court, while Joel represents the Delaware District on the Buffalo Common Council, and Kate is a renowned attorney at the family practice, Feroleto Law. In the courtroom, John took on the most challenging cases not for personal gain but because it was the right thing to do, but his contributions extended well beyond the courtroom. He was instrumental in founding the New York State Trial Lawyers Association Western New York Chapter, serving as its second president. He established a paid internship program with his wife to provide high school students from all backgrounds with legal experience, and he was a generous supporter of numerous community causes from collecting winter gloves for the needy to sponsoring fundraisers for organ transplant recipients and Down syndrome organizations. While he achieved great professional success, John never forgot his roots or the importance of family. John was deeply proud of his Italian heritage and kept traditions that had been passed down through generations of family alive, including making homemade wine. John found joy in life's simple pleasures, tending to his vegetable garden, running marathons, and spending summers with his beloved grandchildren at their family cottage in Thunder Bay, Ontario. Western New York has lost an extraordinary advocate, mentor, and friend. John Feroleto's legacy lives on not just through his legal achievements but through the countless lives he has touched with his generosity, his compassion, and his unwavering commitment to justice. I extend my deepest condolences to Paula; their children, John P., Joel, and Kate; and their six grandchildren. Western New York stands with them in remembering a life well-lived and a legacy that will inspire generations to come. Mr. Speaker, may John Feroleto's memory be a blessing, and may his example of service and devotion to family continue to guide us all. May he rest in peace. Remembering the Life of Marc J. Meyers
Mr. KENNEDY of New York. Mr. Speaker, I rise today to honor the life of Marc J. Meyers, a beloved husband, father, and grandfather, and a public servant who was taken from us too soon. Born to the late Kenneth and Joan Meyers and raised alongside his siblings, Lisa, Tim, and the late Guy Meyers, Marc was the heart of his family and a steady presence in our community. A longtime employee of the town of Cheektowaga and brother to Erie County Legislative Chairman Tim Meyers, he worked to make life better for his neighbors. He found joy in the simple things: family vacations to Rhode Island, fishing, golf, Bills games, and quiet afternoons with his dog, Lambchop. Marc's kindness, humility, and dedication defined him, and his legacy will live on in all that knew him. I send my prayers and deepest condolences to his wife, Pam; their children, Colin and Taylor; their six grandchildren; his surviving siblings; extended family; and all who loved him. Western New York has lost one of our finest. May Marc Meyers rest in peace.
HONORING CONGRESSMAN JOHN LaFALCE2025-04-30
Mr. KENNEDY of New York
Mr. KENNEDY of New York. Mr. Speaker, I rise today with a heavy heart to honor the life and legacy of a great man, a political icon, and a friend and mentor to many, Congressman John LaFalce. John Joseph LaFalce was born October 6, 1939, and passed away on April 11, 2025. He was laid to rest earlier this week. While we mourn the loss of this extraordinary leader, we also celebrate the incredible contributions he made, not just to western New York but to New York State and our entire Nation. The son of a union steward and bakery worker, John never forgot where he came from. His upbringing shaped his politics. He knew what it meant to struggle. His empathy and faith drove his mission in elected office. John lived his faith by fighting for labor rights, defending the vulnerable, and standing up for the voiceless. It was his moral compass that guided every vote, every word, and every fight. He knew that serving in Congress was a sacred calling, and he fulfilled it with grace, conviction, and compassion. Before entering public life, he served our country as a captain in the United States Army. Upon his return from the military, his continued commitment to service drove him toward government. He served in both the New York State Assembly and New York Senate. Then, in 1974, he represented western New York in this Chamber for three decades. John came to Washington in the aftermath of Watergate, part of a new wave of lawmakers determined to restore integrity and rebuild the public's trust in our government. Congressman LaFalce spent nearly 30 years shaping national economic policy, leading the House Committee on Small Business and serving as the top Democrat on the Banking Committee. He built a reputation as a thoughtful, deliberative, and independent voice. He was a leader, not beholden to politics but to the truth and, above all, to the people he served in western New York. On the Committee on Financial Services, John emerged as an early and steadfast voice against the predatory practices of payday lenders and subprime scams that trapped working families in endless debt. He fought to strengthen consumer protections for women by introducing and passing legislation that created opportunities and resources for female entrepreneurs, opening doors that had long been shut. Yet, perhaps nothing exemplifies Congressman John LaFalce's leadership more than his fearless fight for our community following the Love Canal disaster. At a time when so many were reluctant to confront the truth, he stood firmly with the people of Niagara Falls, ensuring they would not be ignored or left behind. He put on boots, walked into basements flooded with toxic sludge, stood with families in their hour of need, and demanded more from our government. John directed the eyes of the world onto western New York and forced the Nation to reckon with the dangers of industrial pollution. He pushed for Federal recognition of this crisis and secured an emergency declaration, ultimately creating the Superfund program. His efforts helped bring justice and relief to families facing an unthinkable public health catastrophe and environmental calamity. John LaFalce was not afraid to take a lonely stand when his conscience demanded it. He voted against authorizing the war in Iraq not once but twice. He challenged legislation he felt went too far, even if it came at a political cost. He never stopped thinking independently, and he never stopped thinking about what was right for western New York. Beneath his tough exterior in Washington was a profoundly loving and gracious soul who treated everyone like family. To him, nothing was more important than family. At his funeral service this past Monday, John's beloved son, Martin, told the story of a devoted father with a tender heart and a love for the joys of life. Congressman LaFalce leaves behind a legacy of service, of decency, and of standing up always for western New York. I am personally grateful to Congressman LaFalce for the guidance and wisdom that he provided me. It has made me a better Representative for our community. I offer my prayers and deepest condolences to his wife, Patricia; his son, Martin; and all of his loved ones. May Congressman John LaFalce rest in peace and power.

From his time in the Army to his elected leadership in both the New York State Assembly and Senate to nearly three decades representing western New York in this Chamber, he set an example to which we all should aspire. While Congressman LaFalce played a pivotal role in shaping national policy, he never forgot where he came from. He will be remembered as a man of great faith, conviction, and passion. His work left an indelible mark on our community and country. To his wife, Patricia; his son, Martin; and his entire family, we offer our prayers and deepest condolences. May Congressman LaFalce rest in peace and power. Mr. Speaker, I now ask that my colleagues join me in a moment of silence.

RECOGNIZING THE JOLLY BOYS2025-04-24
Mr. KENNEDY of New York
Mr. KENNEDY of New York. Mr. Speaker, I rise today to recognize and honor the Jolly Boys of Williamsville, New York, a remarkable group of volunteers whose dedication to serving their community has been a shining example of generosity and selflessness for over five decades. What began in 1971 as a small group of parents from the Village of Williamsville coming together to support their children's involvement in local sports has grown into a community-wide effort to assist those in need, making a lasting impact on countless lives. The origin of the name Jolly Boys is a charming pan of the group's history. It was coined by the wife of one of the founding members, who observed the group's infectious spirit and glee, who in turn, began referring to them as the ``Jolly Boys''. The name stuck, and to this day, the Jolly Boys of Williamsville continue to symbolize that spirit with everything they do. From the very start, the Jolly Boys set themselves apart by committing to a simple yet profound mission: to raise funds exclusively for local children and families facing financial difficulties, primarily through youth sports and activities. They embraced the values of volunteerism, ensuring that all their efforts were carried out by volunteers and that every dollar raised went directly to those in need. Through their commitment, the Jolly Boys have transformed the lives of many, providing vital resources and support to families in Williamsville and beyond. As their efforts expanded, the Jolly Boys continued to evolve, they were able to start using their resources to support homeless shelters, cancer research, local parks, and historic preservation efforts. Their commitment to the community has never shifted, and their impact will be seen and felt for centuries to come. Mr. Speaker, today we recognize the Jolly Boys for their contributions to not only the lives of individuals and families but have also strengthened our community. I ask that I am joined to express gratitude for the Jolly Boys of Williamsville, whose spirit of volunteerism and selflessness should serve as an inspiration to all.

RECOGNIZING SCLERODERMA AWARENESS MONTH2025-04-21
Mr. KENNEDY of New York
Mr. KENNEDY of New York. Mr. Speaker, I rise today to recognize Scleroderma Awareness Month, an important commemoration dedicated to increasing public understanding and awareness of Scleroderma, a chronic autoimmune disease that impacts approximately 300,000 individuals across the United States. Scleroderma, meaning ``hard skin,'' is a rare autoimmune disease characterized by the abnormal growth of connective tissue, leading to skin thickening and potential involvement of internal organs, which can result in serious complications. Each June, we unite with the brave patients, families, and devoted healthcare professionals who work tirelessly to advocate for research, treatment, and support for those affected by scleroderma. This month not only serves as a time of recognition but also as a call to action to advance our commitment to finding a cure for this debilitating disease. Organizations such as the Scleroderma Foundation, the Scleroderma Research Foundation, and the Scleroderma Family Registry and DNA Repository lead the way in research and patient advocacy, providing hope and meaningful support to those impacted. Through public awareness campaigns, educational programs, and patient-focused initiatives, these organizations are making great progress in increasing awareness and advancing scientific breakthroughs. Despite these efforts, there is still much work to be done. Many patients experience delayed diagnoses due to a lack of awareness and limited understanding of this complex disease. Mr. KENNEDY of New York. Mr. Speaker, today I have the distinct honor of congratulating the University at Buffalo women's basketball team on their incredible victory in the women's NIT championship this past weekend. On April 5, before a packed and energized Alumni Arena, the UB Bulls women's basketball team triumphed over Troy 88-84 accomplishing something few teams get to do: end their season with a championship win. This moment marked the deepest postseason run in the history of UB basketball, men's or women's. However, this is more than just a win; this is a legacy in the making. UB guard Lani Cornfield, a proud member of the Seneca Nation Indians and alum of Lake Shore High School, said it best: This just put Buffalo back on the map. I extend a heartfelt congratulations to each of the players on this remarkable team: Mallory Daly, Noelani Cornfield, Sitota Gines, Kirsten Lewis- Williams, Paula Lopez, Makenna Shaffer, Ariana Seawell, Caylen Spano, Terah Harness, Jordyn Beaty, and Chellia Watson. I also recognize the coaching staff that has helped shape this program into a powerhouse and who continue the proud tradition of UB women's basketball: Head Coach Becky Burke, Associate Head Coach Jacey Brooks, Assistant Coach James Ewing, Assistant Coach Erin Sinnott, Director of Basketball Operations Allese Williams, and Vice President and Director of Athletics Mark Alnutt. As UB guard Chellia Watson, who scored 23 points in the final game, put it: The key to victory was defense and grit, just not giving up, and showing we have got all the fight in the world. Now, that is the Buffalo way. This team's journey reminds us all what is possible when talent, opportunity, and unwavering determination come together. These young women are not just champions; they are role models inspiring the next generation of female athletes and showing young people in our community what can be achieved through dedication, resilience, and teamwork. On behalf of western New York and our great Nation, I offer our heartfelt congratulations. We are proud, we are inspired, and we can't wait to see this incredible team in action next year defending their title. Go Bulls.
