HARVEY AND BERNICE JONES POST OFFICE BUILDING2004-09-07
Mrs. MILLER of Michigan
Mrs. MILLER of Michigan. Mr. Speaker, I ask unanimous consent that all Members may have 5 legislative days within which to revise and extend their remarks and include extraneous material on the bill under consideration.
Mrs. MILLER of Michigan. Mr. Speaker, I yield myself such time as I may consume. Mr. Speaker, on behalf of the Committee on Government Reform, I am pleased to rise in support of H.R. 4381. The Congress names post offices after numerous Americans, some famous, some anonymous, who devote inordinate time, energy, and resources to constructive causes, to their communities, or to the greater public. And today, through the consideration of H.R. 4381, we recognize a couple that is among the most deserving to be honored by Congress with a local post office. Mr. Speaker, Harvey and Bernice Jones dedicated literally a lifetime of service to the people of Arkansas. The Joneses gave away literally millions of dollars to schools, to hospitals, to charities, most of them in northwest Arkansas, through the Harvey and Bernice Jones Charitable Trust. After Harvey died in 1989, Bernice established the Harvey and Bernice Jones Eye Institute at the University of Arkansas Medical Center in Little Rock in 1994. The next year Bernice opened the Harvey and Bernice Jones Center for Families and Children in Springdale. The center, which features a swimming pool and ice skating rink, continues to positively mentor youths. President Clinton took notice of Mrs. Jones's work in his home State and awarded Bernice the Presidential Citizens Medal for her benevolence to humanity on February 22, 1996. Bernice Jones passed away September 10, 2003. And I thank the gentleman from Arkansas (Congressman Boozman) for advancing this legislation on behalf of Harvey and Bernice Jones. This beloved couple deserves to be remembered by the people of Springdale forever. This post office should serve as a wonderful memorial to their compassion. Mr. Speaker, I reserve the balance of my time.
Mrs. MILLER of Michigan. Mr. Speaker, on that I demand the yeas and nays.
Mrs. MILLER of Michigan. Mr. Speaker, I have no further requests for time, and I yield back the balance of my time.
Mrs. MILLER of Michigan. Mr. Speaker, I yield such time as he may consume to the gentleman from Arkansas (Mr. Boozman), my distinguished colleague.
ANTHONY I. LOMBARDI MEMORIAL POST OFFICE BUILDING2004-09-07
Mr. Speaker, H.R. 4618, introduced by the gentleman from New York (Congressman Engel) designates this postal facility in Nanuet, New York, as the ``Anthony I. Lombardi Memorial Post Office Building.'' All 29 Members of the New York State delegation have cosponsored this bill. Mr. Speaker, Anthony Lombardi spent his entire adult life as a respected postal letter carrier in his hometown of Nanuet, New York. In addition, he taught Sunday school and worked as a custodial supervisor at Nanuet High School. He was a fearless Army sergeant, who served our Nation during World War II, landing on Normandy during D-Day. He was twice honored with the Bronze Star for bravery. Interestingly, one of his Bronze Stars was for rescuing a wounded soldier in the battlefield, a man who safely returned home and became the father to Gary Hart, who grew up to be a United States Senator. Mr. Speaker, this is a fitting tribute to a lifelong postal employee, a man who was beloved by his community, Anthony Lombardi. I certainly support H.R. 4618. I would urge all my colleagues to do the same. I thank the gentleman from New York for his compassionate work on this legislation. Mr. Speaker, I reserve the balance of my time.
Mrs. MILLER of Michigan. Mr. Speaker, I move to suspend the rules and pass the bill (H.R. 4618) to designate the facility of the United States Postal Service located at 10 West Prospect Street in Nanuet, New York, as the ``Anthony I. Lombardi Memorial Post Office Building''.
Mrs. MILLER of Michigan. Mr. Speaker, I yield back the balance of my time.
GENERAL WILLIAM CAREY LEE POST OFFICE BUILDING2004-09-07
Mrs. MILLER of Michigan
Mrs. MILLER of Michigan. Mr. Speaker, I move to suspend the rules and pass the bill (H.R. 4556) to designate the facility of the United States Postal Service located at 1115 South Clinton Avenue in Dunn, North Carolina, as the ``General William Carey Lee Post Office Building.''
Mrs. MILLER of Michigan. Mr. Speaker, I ask unanimous consent that all Members may have 5 legislative days within which to revise and extend their remarks and include extraneous material on H.R. 4556, the bill under consideration.
Mrs. MILLER of Michigan. Mr. Speaker, I yield myself as much time as I might consume. Mr. Speaker, I am pleased to rise in support of H.R. 4556. This bill designates the U.S. Postal Service facility at 1115 South Clinton Avenue, in Dunn, North Carolina, as the General William Carey Lee Post Office Building. General William Lee, also known as the Father of the Airborne, was the founder and original Commander of the 101st Airborne Division. This elite paratrooper company was hailed for its incredibly heroic efforts during the D-Day invasion of the Second World War. The 101st Airborne Division is famously portrayed in the television series Band of Brothers. General Lee enlisted in the Army in 1917 and served during both World War I and World War II. His combat honors include the Distinguished Service Medal, the American Defense Service Medal, and the World War I and World War II Victory Medals. He remains one of America's most decorated military leaders, and since he passed away in 1948, this honor for such an authentic American hero is long overdue. Therefore, I would urge all Members to support the swift passage of this post office designation. Mr. Speaker, I congratulate the gentleman from North Carolina (Mr. Etheridge) for his work on H.R. 4556. Mr. Speaker, I reserve the balance of my time.
Mrs. MILLER of Michigan. Mr. Speaker, I would urge all Members to support H.R. 4556, and I yield back the balance of my time.
Mrs. MILLER of Michigan. Mr. Speaker, on that I demand the yeas and nays.

Mrs. MILLER of Michigan. Mr. Speaker, I move to suspend the rules and pass the bill (H.R. 4442) to designate the facility of the United States Postal Service located at 1050 North Hills Boulevard in Reno, Nevada, as the ``Guardians of Freedom Memorial Post Office Building'' and to authorize the installation of a plaque at such site, and for other purposes.
NO HONEST MISTAKE2004-07-21
Mrs. MILLER of Michigan
Mrs. MILLER of Michigan. Mr. Speaker, it is absolutely amazing that since the revelations about Sandy Berger, who was National Security Adviser for President Clinton and has been the Kerry Campaign's senior policy adviser, since these revelations that Sandy Berger had removed classified documents at the National Archives, that my colleagues on the other side of the aisle have been so dismissive of this gross violation of our national security. I can only imagine the howls from the other side of the aisle if allegations were made against Condoleezza Rice, that she had stuffed documents, classified documents in her socks and removed them from the Archives and that some of the documents were still missing. I am sure we would hear accusations of a cover-up, a vast conspiracy. No, we are hearing none of that from my colleagues on the other side of the aisle. Instead, what do we hear? They say it was a mistake, an honest mistake, more innocent than it looks. We certainly do not hear any calls for investigations. Well, I am both shocked and appalled by these reports, and I am calling for the appropriate House committee to investigate. The American people deserve to know.

SERGEANT FIRST CLASS PAUL RAY SMITH POST OFFICE BUILDING2004-07-12
Mrs. MILLER of Michigan
Mrs. MILLER of Michigan. Mr. Speaker, I would certainly urge all Members to support H.R. 4380, and I yield back the balance of my time.
Mrs. MILLER of Michigan. Mr. Speaker, I yield such time as he may consume to the distinguished gentleman from Florida (Mr. Bilirakis), the sponsor of this resolution.
Mrs. MILLER of Michigan. Mr. Speaker, I yield myself such time as I may consume. Mr. Speaker, H.R. 4380 commemorates the incredible bravery and patriotism of Army Sergeant First Class Paul Ray Smith. On April 4 of 2003, Sergeant Smith of Holiday, Florida, was tragically killed in action in Operation Iraqi Freedom during a fierce fire fight near Baghdad. Mr. Speaker, Sergeant Smith was a member of the Bravo Company, Eleventh Engineer Battalion of the Army's Third Infantry Division. He enlisted after graduating from high school and served an accomplished 13-year career in the Army. Sergeant Smith served valiantly in Operation Desert Storm, Operation Desert Shield, Kosovo, and Bosnia. He earned several military honors, including the Bronze Star as well as the Purple Heart. Mr. Speaker, Sergeant Smith leaves behind a wife and two children in Holiday, Florida; and we pray and we hope that this post office designation will always remind them of the bravery and the love of their husband and father, Paul Ray Smith. Our entire Nation owes Sergeant Smith an incredible debt, and that is why I strongly urge the passage of H.R. 4380. I certainly thank the gentleman from Florida (Mr. Bilirakis) for advancing this legislation that honors the courageous Sergeant Paul Ray Smith. Mr. Speaker, I reserve the balance of my time.
Mrs. MILLER of Michigan. Mr. Speaker, I ask unanimous consent that all Members may have 5 legislative days within which to revise and extend their remarks and include extraneous material on the bill under consideration.
Mrs. MILLER of Michigan. Mr. Speaker, I yield myself such time as I may consume. General Leave
